Research & Teaching

Close connections to the Charité

Specialist geriatric hospitals are no longer a rarity in Berlin. Even so, the Evangelische Geriatriezentrum Berlin (EGZB) still has a special role to play: it is home among others also to research and teaching. This guarantees that your treatment is always in line with the very latest scientific findings.

The high scientific and professional expertise of our employees is due above all to our close connections with the Charité. Our Medical Director Professor Dr. Elisabeth Steinhagen-Thiessen runs the Lipid Clinic at the university hospital where she also holds the chair for inner medicine and geriatrics, so that she is authorised to provide advanced medical training for doctors. Furthermore, Professor Dr. Elisabeth Steinhagen-Thiessen is also leader of the Charité's Geriatric Research Group (FGG) at the EGZB which performs studies on topics such as dementia, tele-medicine and falls at our acute care hospital and day clinic.

EGZB attractive for reformed medical programme students

Research is closely related to teaching. Patients become aware of this with the groups of students visiting our wards where they receive instruction in geriatrics from our doctors through bedside teaching.

It is one of the achievements of geriatric specialists such as Professor Steinhagen-Thiessen that geriatrics today has become an established part of medical degree courses. The Charité also offers a reformed medical studies programme with a greater focus on clinical practice; it offers medical students an opportunity to spend several weeks on block placement at the EGZB. This gives them an opportunity to become better acquainted with the clinical pictures of various geriatric illnesses and the complex treatment involved in multimorbid patients, under the instruction of our specialist doctors. During their placement, they can also observe our speech therapists, physio- and occupational therapists, dieticians and neurologists at work.

On-going staff training in the EGZB Academy

Last but not least, our Academy provides further and advanced training to guarantee a high standard of treatment. Nursing staff, therapists and doctors regularly attend the highly practical courses referring to Bobath therapy, nutrition for senior citizens, wound and scar care as well as pain therapy. Many of our staff also work as teachers and instructors in the Academy.
