Research for senior citizens, in cooperation with the Charité
Age has many faces. While some 80-year olds still run the marathon, other people of this age are bed-ridden and in need of intensive care. The challenges facing geriatric research are correspondingly varied. As well as actually treating typical illnesses that come with an advanced age, here doctors and scientists are called to develop concepts for sustaining individual independence and for preventing serious illnesses. However, one important part of geriatric research consists in pure research, as many typical processes and special aspects involved in old age are still not adequately understood.
This is why the EGZB is particularly proud to be home to the Charité's Geriatric Research Group (FGG) which acts as a pacemaker in clinical research into geriatric care. Led by Professor Dr. Elisabeth Steinhagen-Thiessen MD, the researchers and technicians at the EGZB take up the challenges of an aging society in their own research complex. They work together with patients to find solutions that will help to make life safer and more comfortable for senior citizens in future. In particular, the research activities focus on the detection and prevention of falls, rehabilitation after a stroke and tele-medical applications.
